What does it take to become an approved supplier for one of Europe’s leading energy groups?
Matelec has proudly completed Iberdrola’s rigorous qualification process, officially becoming an approved supplier of three-phase transformers immersed in insulating liquid for low-voltage distribution. This marks a major milestone in expanding our presence in the Spanish market.
Key Milestones in the Qualification Process:
- Technical Documentation Submission
A comprehensive technical file was submitted, outlining:
- Factory capabilities
- Approved supplier list and manufacturing standards
- Product designs aligned with international norms and i-DE specifications
- Prototype Development and Testing
Three prototype transformers, each with a different rating, were developed specifically for type and special testing. These were sent to Tecnalia, a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance, where all testing was conducted under the direct supervision of Iberdrola’s engineering team. - Successful Test Results
All prototypes successfully passed the full range of electrical tests, meeting Iberdrola’s strict technical criteria and demonstrating Matelec’s engineering reliability and product quality. - On-site Factory Audit
The final step was a comprehensive audit conducted at Matelec’s production facilities. Iberdrola’s engineering team reviewed every aspect of the manufacturing process and quality control procedures. The audit concluded successfully, marking the final approval milestone.
As a result, Matelec received the official “Anexo de Calificación”, formally recognizing us as an approved supplier to Iberdrola. This achievement reinforces our ongoing commitment to excellence and strengthens our position as a trusted partner in the global energy sector.
From Qualification to Implementation
Following this qualification, we participated in a competitive tender for the supply of distribution transformers. Matelec fgot awarded a three-year contract, which began on June 19, 2024. The first batch of transformers was delivered at the beginning of 2025, marking the successful start of this long-term partnership.
A Collective Achievement
This milestone reflects not just technical excellence, but the strength of collaboration and shared commitment across teams. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved through coordinated effort, mutual respect, and a common goal.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to:
- Our design, production, testing, and logistics teams for their dedication, precision, and seamless execution
- Iberdrola’s engineering and procurement departments for their trust, transparency, and constructive partnership
- The Tecnalia team for their professionalism, technical expertise, and continued support throughout the testing phase
This achievement belongs to everyone involved, and paves the way for even greater accomplishments ahead. This project not only highlights Matelec’s technical capabilities and resilience, but also reinforces our positioning as a trusted supplier within the European energy sector.
